Levi’s is one of the oldest and most iconic American apparel brands, outfitting the world with high-quality denim clothing for over 150 years. While best known for their jeans, the brand is also a top purveyor of a full range of apparel, including jackets and t-shirts.

Levi’s, formally Levi Strauss & Company, was founded in 1853 by German immigrant Levi Strauss in San Francisco, Calif. For roughly the first 100 years, Levi’s was known primarily as a workwear brand, outfitting people around the country with durable denim jeans that were built to stand up to the rigorous demands of factory and field work. An early innovation that helped Levi’s stand out from other workwear manufacturers was the inclusion of copper rivets on the stress points (i.e. pocket seams) to help prevent tearing and increase durability. In addition to the rivets, Levi’s jeans are also known for the V-shaped stitching on the rear pockets, the red logo tab on the rear right pocket, and the brown logo patch at the rear waist.

Despite its beginnings as a workwear brand, by the late 1950s and early ’60s, Levi’s denim jeans had also transitioned into a fashionable option for young people around the globe, first popularized by “greasers” and movie stars like James Dean. Generations later, Levi’s is one of the most iconic apparel brands on earth, still celebrated for their long-lasting and stylish denim apparel.
